Woodturning Day . . .

I’m at my happiest when I’m woodturning. Each Thursday I head to the club workshop where I receive wonderful tuition and fabulous companionship. There is something very special about being surrounded by other likeminded people. I am constantly in awe of how talented my co-woodturners are, I am learning so much by just observing them at work.

My daughter-in-law has put my name down to have a table next to hers at an upcoming craft fair. Hopefully my table will showcase my woodturning, and Kelly will be selling her beautiful crochet creations. Even though the fair isn’t until August, I need to start turning some bits and pieces to sell. Today I chose to make some wet turned flowers and rustic vases. It is quite different turning wood that has just been cut, rather than wood that has been drying for 2-3 or more years. I have rough turned the vases, and when they have dried for a few weeks I will go back and refine the necks of the vases, sand them and remove the bases where they were attached to the lathe. This will make them more presentable for sale. Likewise with the flowers, in a couple of weeks I will drill a small hole in the back of them, insert a florist wire stem and dip them in food colour. This hopefully will give my table a burst of colour, as most of my turning will be natural wood.

My old dehydrator trays have come in handy for placing these to dry on, letting air

circulate around each piece. I even use them to dry other pieces I have painted. Nothing gets wasted around here. Some of my husband's excessive collecting habits has rubbed off on me lol.
